The megacity Rises to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.
Alarming Air Quality Measurements
Multiple areas of the city recorded an AQI over 500, which equals 10x the safe level recommended by the WHO.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1,800, equating to 15-20x higher than acceptable standards.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Changes
For the past four years, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the metropolis as winter sets in.
However earlier this year, the recently formed local leadership petitioned the highest court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".
Legal Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the city, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Several recording stations throughout the city recorded air quality peaking around midnight to the most severe measurements recorded during Diwali in at least the past three years.
International Consequences
Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.
Persistent Environmental Crisis
Extremely elevated levels of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Various Pollution Factors
The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby regions of farming communities.
In these regions, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, creating toxic smog that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air arrives.
Health and Financial Impact
Public health and economic toll on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.
These hazardous conditions causes high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be causing approximately 10k untimely fatalities each year in the city.
