The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which works to preserve the UK's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was given the cheque on mid-October as his third album the album was named the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the shows I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also took part, collecting over £100k on his recent tour to help 38 small stages across the UK.

The money assisted spaces that were confronting potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from flooding, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and audiences.

"The concept that money from performances in large arenas backs the local stages, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," the star has stated.

He is far from the only musician to donate his honor prize money to worthy causes.

Back when Pulp earned the prize in the year 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman Cocker announced that the group would give their prize money to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer the artist divided her bounty across a few organizations, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," Ms Dynamite explained to the media.

Two years ago, they contributed their funds to the community center that nurtured their band, in addition to other grassroots music organisations.

And winners that year M People contributed their prize to a MS organization after a friend was found to have the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," stated vocalist the singer. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected another person's life."

Recently, the MVT shared it had protected two grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and the second in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
