The boxer, 30, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and indicted of backing an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and confined in isolation.

Further signatories to the letter include Tracy Edwards, who skippered the inaugural women's squad in a international sailing event and was the first woman to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the ex- leader of the national squad an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the country's selection for the 1978 World Cup.

Detention and Unfair Trial

The athlete was arrested in March 2020. The charges against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and damage of government belongings”. His ruling has been reversed on two occasions but on the fourth of October it was upheld on the latest review. His legal proceedings was denounced as “highly unjust” by rights defenders and organizations.

Call to International Body

The urging to halt the boxer's death sentence follows a earlier statement to the UN high commissioner for freedoms, endorsed by more than 100 advocates and organizations, calling for intervention to stop the sports figure's death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

As per findings, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has achieved alarming proportions”. In the year 2023, the government put to death at least over 850 people – a nearly half increase on 2022.
