A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
